LIHUE: The biggest advantage to staying in Lihue is that you are closer to services. There are two very nice (and expensive) resort hotels on the beach in Lihue - a Marriott and a Hilton - as well as quite a few smaller hotels and condominiums to choose from. The beach in front of the Marriott is quite small, but the one in front of the Hilton is supposed to be very long and nice. Since Lihue is facing east you may be able to watch beautiful sunrises over the ocean (if you're up that early), but not sunsets. There are a number of restaurants in the Lihue area, as well as quite a few places for shopping including a small mall. Lihue is where you will fly into and is centrally located for day trips to either side of the island. POIPU: Poipu is situated on the south side of the island, but is facing southwest. This means you will have a lot of beautiful sunsets to watch from your balcony or the beach. The south side of the island is considered to be the dry, "sunny" side, meaning you will get less rain. There is also less wind as the prevailing winds are generally out of the north. This also means it may be a little warmer here. There are quite a few very nice beaches including Poipu Beach and Shipwreck Beach which are known for good surfing and bodysurfing. There is also some very nice snorkeling right off the beach. Accommodations in Poipu are abundant. There are some very nice resort hotels on the beach with full ammenities like the Marriott, Hyatt and Sheraton, as well as some less expensive hotels. The most popular option for brethren will probably be to stay in privately owned condominiums - both on and off the beach. There are literally thousands of condos available in all sizes, from 1-5 bedrooms. If you prefer a private home, there are also quite a few of them for rent. One thing to remember is that other than the nice hotels, most accommodations do not have central air conditioning. If you do not do well in warm climates, you may want to verify that the accommodations you are booking have air conditioning. Poipu has quite a few very nice restaurants, as well as some less expensive ones. There is also a nice upscale shopping center and a number of small shops in the area. There is a grocery store five minutes away in Koloa, as well as a number of other shops and restaurants. Poipu has just about everything you will need to have a wonderful stay, with the only down side being that it will take you a little longer to drive to church - but you may find that it's worth the drive! WAILUA/KAPAA: The Wailua/Kapaa area is on the east side of the island north of Lihue. Due to it's location, it typically has more of a constant light wind that blows, as well as gets a little more rain than Poipu. It does have some nice beaches in the area, but due to the Wailua River that flows into the ocean nearby, there is not much coral. This area is not as built up as Lihue and Poipu, so is a little less crowded. There are not any luxury resort hotels in this area, but there are a few nice hotels with many amenities (Outrigger and Resort Quest) and numerous condominiums. Keep in mind that rental prices could drop in the next few months due to the economic situation. When making a reservation, you may want to ask the owner or company you’re dealing with if they will lower your rate should their prices drop prior to October. SPECIFIC RENTALS AND CHURCH DISCOUNTS Homes: Rental of ocean front and ocean view homes in Kauai, especially if they have a pool or spa, tend to be very expensive. Generally, rental homes a short drive or walk from the ocean are much less expensive. Their units are newer than many of the other properties in Kauai and most, if not all, of their units are air conditioned. They are only a short 3-5 minute walk from the beach and have every amenity you could want.
